Remember watching a video so funny or inspiring, you had to share it with your friends?
Viral videos have increased in popularity over the years thanks to the proliferation of video sharing sites such as Youtube and Vimeo that allow the easy sharing of videos. Brands are beginning to use viral video promotions in order to reinforce their brand image. Smart move given that the average person spends 15min on Youtube everyday and that it receives 2 billion views a day. Viral video marketing offers the promise of unparalleled levels of brand awareness and engagement.
However, the rosy picture is shattered by the fact that brand managers are ill-informed or have unrealistic expectations of the shiny new toy. It can be argued that the central objective of advertising and promotion is to establish a brand’s mind share within the market space. Mind share can be defined as the level of awareness in the minds of consumers that a specific brand, company, product, or service commands. In this day and age, marketing touchpoints are getting more and more cluttered, thereby making it increasingly tougher for brands to make an impression.

Walk into any mobile phone store in town and you’ll see rows of new touch screen mobile phones. Apple, HTC, Samsung. Then, there’s our long forgotten friend Nokia. It is becoming increasingly difficult to remember the time when Nokia dominated the cell phone market. Remember the old nokia 3310, the most hardy, well received phone introduced in 2000? Not so much I guess.

Building a brand takes years of effort. You need time to earn trust and gain credibility through consistently delivering your brand promises. Destroying a brand, however, is much easier. Mistakes made by the organisation, be it deliberate or not, can destroy the brand in a matter of hours. The recent Taiwan DEHP scandal is a good case in point.
